I remember the days when a fly angler turned up at the river with one rod. This rod would cover pretty much any tactic during the day. These days it appears that they have taken a leaf from the coarse anglers book and take far too much "specialist" gear to the bank.

But its nice to have a piece of kit that is designed to do what you need it to do  :z16

So..does the typical river angler now take a 9'9 streamer rod, an 8'6 dry fly rod, a 10' bugging rod, a 9' nymph rod, a 10' spider rod etc etc...?

I am afraid these are well outwith my price range! lol :cry
I have asked santa for a new greys streamflex. 9' #4 Fingers crossed :z7
I honestly think there is a bit of a tackle tart in all anglers. Its one of the many joys of the sport. Pride of ownership 'n' all that! :wink

I think it comes from the fact that you can't use one rod for all types of fishing.  I would love to have one rod that I could use for delicate trout fishing, chucking big lures or heavy tubes but its not possible.  if it was I would only have the one rod.

Matt,

The closest I have come is my Helios 966, I have used it with everything from type 8 and even short T14 heads to Spey casting heads made from DT10's and have also used it for presention small dries on with a TT or Barrio on a long leader but you're right, some of those situations may have been better handled with other rods  :z4

Never say never :roll but I doubt this ones for me.

1) 9' 9" special high stick length.    just buy a normal 10' Rod?
2) £629.00!  :shock                     just buy 3 normal ten foot rods
3) designed to throw open loops.   send me £600 and I teach you to throw both open and tailing loops

That said I'm sure they are cracking rods.

Anyone tried or own one?

If I had that sort of money lying around I'd prefer to commision the building of a personalised rod.
Please don't PM me Alex - I don't have any money!

Hang on..something just hit me...and its something Mike and myself have talked about..and thats the slightly softer, deeper action that this rod pertains to have.

Sage, for a long time, has produced faster and faster rods in the top end bracket..the XP, the TCR and the TCX for example...interesting that they are now saying a more through action rod is "more efficient and safer to use". I find that interesting as anyone who has tried one of Mikes softer rods has generally loved them and found them easier to use and more efficient for casting with teams of flies and at fishing ranges.

Mike/Sandy....you want to sue them!! ;)

Simple fact is, you can cast big streamers and large flies on fast rods, open up up the loops a bit by opening up the casting arc, problem is a lot of folk cannot do this and struggle a bit.  Same goes for fast actioned rods, many folk struggle to load them effectively as they are simply using too big an arc.  For example if I wanted to fish small dries on my TCR at close range, I could & would by using a very short stroke, If I wanted to throw big streamers on the same rod I would stick a 7 line on it, seriously increase the stroke and open up the loops a bit.  For anglers that are not casting geeks, a slower softer rod can be an advantage  :grin
Over the past two years or so I have learned to almost disregard what is written on a rod and now chose a line for the task at hand then find a rod from the cupboard that most comfortably deals with it.  Very often, the line does not match what is stamped on the rod, that stuff is there only really for guidance.

Rob, what's this walking on water stuff about?
Cheers

You mean normal people with normal casting  :wink :wink

I think we have spoken about the perfect action for big flies is something a fraction softer than whats normally suggested so that the loops are a little wider to help stop the heavy fly dropping on the cast and catching the line..

As for walking on water...with the amount of big trout you have caught from the Don, you must have devine intervention :)
