repairing a rod...

So a good few years back my Zpey Reel Steel rod snapped between the 2 legs of ring, near the top of rod. I put the top of a course fishing whip up the centre of the rod, and it fitted neatly in the break. I then VERY roughly whipped over the top of it with GSP tying thread and used varnish over the top. It works very well but is an eye sore so i am looking to take the mess off and i have bought some proper whipping thread

I plan to:
-remove the existing ring
-whip over the break/join with proper thread
-put the snake ring back on
-finish it as neatly as i can

I have a hot glue gun and whipping thread - does that just leave me needing epoxy or is there something else i need ?

Oh, and if there a best way to remove a ring from a rod , removing the existing resin etc?

Sorry for a tardy response in this James
I've always found that if you slice the wrap on top of the ring foot then you don't run the risk of scoring the blank.

Then most wraps will peel off like the skin of a grape. Use the back of a knife (blunt side) to scrape any residue off. Should clean up fine.
