I do like experimenting with flies, part of it is perhaps an extension of catching on a fly you have tied yourself, on to catching on a fly of your own pattern. A lot of these experiments will fall flat on their face, but some will work and some will turn in to stepping stones to an improved pattern.

I suppose deep down all tyers want to come up with that "silver bullet" fly. But we all know what a disaster it would be if we actually managed it.
