It probably depends what colour you wear

I ahve to confess i geenrally only use the red and blue ones, the laquer wears off the reveal gold hooks underneath and this doesn't really affect the effectiveness of the fly.
So i guess experiment and find out. :z16

henry of the water buoys gave me a bare red hook to try the other day.
i tried it today and caught a fish the first cast which proceeded to make off with it  :shock:

To add to this post.

In the last week i've had 2 doubles out of Haddo on a size 16 red hook with a 3/32 tungsten bead.
Fished singley on a 15ft leader.

It is worth trying.

Look out for Jardine Grayling Bug/Red Hook at places like the Glasgow Angling Centre  :idea:

i tryed painting a heavy grub hook white and it worked very well.the first ones were painted using tip-x but they didnt last long.i found sum water proof white paint then coated them with as hard as nails and they stand up to anything

got a few fish when nothing else was catching
