Title: Bare hooks!
Post by: Barry Robertson on 26/11/2006 at 01:07
Just noticed on one of ther other topics you were all talking about bare hooks, Is this a piss take or does it actually work. I suppose a black hook bare would look like a skinny buzzer. How does this bare hook work , i presume you just fish it as a buzzer?

Cheers

Just so, fish them just the same way as a buzzer. Think of painted hooks like "Jock Scot" ( A H E Wood) mentioned in "Greased line fishing for Salmon" and you've pretty much got the idea. Some pre-coloured hooks are also available on the market, Drennan for example.

Yes, see http://www.fishingmegastore.com/acatalog/Charles_Jardine_Nymph_Hooks.html
But Sandy may have a better source?

Try www.celticflycraft.co.uk  for the living nymph hooks.
They have a great stock of stuff and great service.
Lathkill have them too but since John took a back seat the service has suffered big time.

"reckon i will have to get the gothic nail varnish out when i get home and try some funcy colours oot"

Good idea.

Notkeenonlures. If you glue some small silver/tungsten beads to the hooks they are perfect point flies, just fish like buzzers.

Shouldn't matter much , the blue and red ones Hamish uses are longshank lure hooks, about a 12 or 10 i think. They work as well as the others.

You could try a black hook with an orange bead too.

Hi,
Why not use a coloured waterproof pen  to colour the hook.

It works well with most colours.

I,ve even invented a new pattern called the Oliver Kite Special.

does the nail varnish painting on the hook actually work? i've considered it but never really had the courage.

Colin.

It probably depends what colour you wear

I ahve to confess i geenrally only use the red and blue ones, the laquer wears off the reveal gold hooks underneath and this doesn't really affect the effectiveness of the fly.
So i guess experiment and find out. :z16

To add to this post.

In the last week i've had 2 doubles out of Haddo on a size 16 red hook with a 3/32 tungsten bead.
Fished singley on a 15ft leader.

It is worth trying.
