Just noticed on one of ther other topics you were all talking about bare hooks, Is this a piss take or does it actually work. I suppose a black hook bare would look like a skinny buzzer. How does this bare hook work , i presume you just fish it as a buzzer?
Cheers

No piss take and yes, they do work

Just so, fish them just the same way as a buzzer. Think of painted hooks like "Jock Scot" ( A H E Wood) mentioned in "Greased line fishing for Salmon" and you've pretty much got the idea. Some pre-coloured hooks are also available on the market, Drennan for example.

Not a bad site after all , learning loads out here on nightshift. Offshore aint a bad place after all !

No Joke
But its one of those great products you can tell everyone about and they just dont buy into it.
As Hamish says drennen make some in various colours, i use the Charles Jardine living Nymph hooks in Red , now and then

Thanks mike , was up fishing at insch last time home and was a fair treck up the road for me - is Haddo just as far away?.
Iam normally fishing every weekday on my two weeks off so might have to pop up for a days fishing this time off!
-
Baz
Try www.celticflycraft.co.uk for the living nymph hooks.
They have a great stock of stuff and great service.
Lathkill have them too but since John took a back seat the service has suffered big time.

I have used bare Drennen UV hooks before, especially the red ones. Perfect bloodworm immitation...and the green ones are perfect midge pupae.
-
Rob
Have you tried the Blue ones?
Brownies love em.Damn hard to get now though, unfortunatley.
Silver and gold work too.

-
I have found the red hooks but you lads must have a secret stash where you buy the other coloured hooks as i cant find the anywhere!
-
Keep looking
http://www.tomcsaville.com/hooks/hooks.htm but they're not the whole answer.... experiment yourself :!:

"reckon i will have to get the gothic nail varnish out when i get home and try some funcy colours oot"
Good idea.
Notkeenonlures. If you glue some small silver/tungsten beads to the hooks they are perfect point flies, just fish like buzzers.

Somers have the Drennen hooks for sale just now..going cheap..but seem to only have the long shank lure ones left :(
-
Rob
Shouldn't matter much , the blue and red ones Hamish uses are longshank lure hooks, about a 12 or 10 i think. They work as well as the others.
Sandy
-
Indeed they do
-
You could try a black hook with an orange bead too.
I would reckon that would be pretty good too.
Sandy

just been up loft and the uv rainbow triad are by drennan size 14 and are blue, gold and red dont know where they were purchased though
-
They should be perfect.
Give them a try :z16
Sandy

just found a website selling the uv rainbow hooks by drennan its www.jackfish.net under drennan game flytying hooks there £2.63 for 16 i think and there are two styles plus loads of other drennan hooks

Hi,
Why not use a coloured waterproof pen to colour the hook.
It works well with most colours.
I,ve even invented a new pattern called the Oliver Kite Special.
Paul.
-
does the nail varnish painting on the hook actually work? i've considered it but never really had the courage.
Colin.
-
It probably depends what colour you wear
I ahve to confess i geenrally only use the red and blue ones, the laquer wears off the reveal gold hooks underneath and this doesn't really affect the effectiveness of the fly.
So i guess experiment and find out. :z16

henry of the water buoys gave me a bare red hook to try the other day.

To add to this post.
In the last week i've had 2 doubles out of Haddo on a size 16 red hook with a 3/32 tungsten bead.
Fished singley on a 15ft leader.
It is worth trying.
Sandy
-
Not just red either

i tryed painting a heavy grub hook white and it worked very well.the first ones were painted using tip-x but they didnt last long.i found sum water proof white paint then coated them with as hard as nails and they stand up to anything
got a few fish when nothing else was catching
