Fishing The Fly Scotland Forum

Hamish Young

OK, so there I was sitting in my private study in quiet contemplation (I confess, I was in the bathroom) reading the November issue of T&S when something on page 12 caught my eye in 'short casts' in a piece on Dublin Salmon.
States in there that the only two European capital cities that have a wild run of Salmon are Reykjavik and Dublin.
Now hang on a minute says I..... that can't be right.

So what about Helsinki :? I had to look up the name of the river (it's the Vantaanjoki by the way) but it still has a run of wild salmon and it's in Europe isn't it :? Must be something that swims through Stockholm to get to a river (that isn't a discarded ABBA album cover or a knackered Volvo that wasn't tarted up by it's new Chinese owner) surely that counts :?

Are there others :? I can't believe it's just the two mentioned in T&S ???

London??

Although that one is debateable. It has a small run of Salmon but the EA have recently said that they are all stocked and that no natural spawning has taken place...but there could be one or two there.

Peter Rawlinson

Edinburgh springs to mind ?

Hamish Young

Yup, both Edinburgh and London have merit although I agree Rob - London and the Thames is a wee bit of a long shot.
Paris is also a possibility :z17 :?

I'd have thought Oslo and Helsinki would probably have salmon running their rivers too. :z8

See :http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/france/6013819/Salmon-return-to-Frances-River-Seine.html

Interesting to read that this is apparently due to habitat improvements and not stocking :z16

Best wishes
Mike

Scotland - Edinburgh - River Almond  :wink

Alex

Mike Barrio

Sorry Alex :oops  :z4  :z4

Yes, the Cramond Angling Club appear to be catching salmon on the River Almond.

See: http://www.fishalmond.co.uk/

And yes, looks like there are salmon in Stockholm Hamish :z16

Any more cities folks?

Any More Cities?

Aberdeen the "Oil Capital" of Europe  :grin

Irvine

Mike Barrio

Should have said capital cities :X1

Sorry Irvine :oops

There again, maybe "oil capital" is OK :z4

Cheers

Douglas in the Isle of man? (may be pushing it admittedly!).

The Rivers Dhoo and Glass both have salmon, although arguably when running through the town (it's not a city) it is the 'Douglas' river (still has salmon though).

So I guess it's easy to say with a wee bit of effort it's easy to see that the sweeping comment in T&S was a trifle under-researched at best and just plain nonsense at worst :?

That sort of thing really 'grinds my gears' ::)

That, Old Chap, is how the Main Stream media works these days. The MSM, and in particular the BBC, target reports and TV shows at a target audience aged....

....TEN  :mad :mad :mad :mad :mad :mad :mad

That is official BBC policy! Therefore it is up to the more intelligent people out there, like the inhabitants of this forum, to challenge everything these blighters say and not swallow the cool-aid.

There is a very good reason that I don't buy a paper or watch much news  :mad

Rant mode off.

PS

Just never get me started on "climate change"  :mad :mad :mad :mad :mad :mad :mad :mad :mad :mad :mad :mad :mad
Climate changes, deal with it!

Rob Brownfield

I think, but I may be wrong, that the Salmon of the Danube are not Atlantic Salmon but are actually Huchen..which are still a Salmonidae but not as we know it.

So does it count?

Ewan Lindsay

Couldn't agree with more Euan.

The so called Media today cannot be bothered researching anything today. It's only when you see/hear a news story on a subject you are familiar with do you realise how lazy, ignorant and melodramatic modern journalists and editors are (especially TV News channels).

Don't get me started on 'Climate Change' either...be careful though; we'll be branded as 'Deniers'...

Ewan
