Lochter Report – Yesterday at Lochter
« on: 26/01/2022 at 13:48 »
Down Lochter way last week the word “yesterday” was very much in the minds of some anglers.  It was not the Beatles song they were humming to, although the lyrics “All my troubles seemed so far away now it looks as though they’re here to stay” could be quite apt for the times we live in.
Alas no, it was the change from mild weather to frosty mornings which caused a wild variation in catch rates.  The balmy days of bending rods were replaced by crunching through the frost and descending your flies to a depth which would hopefully tempt a torpored trout.

Of course many of the anglers who arrived on these crispy mornings could be met by the dreaded phrase “You should have been here yesterday – it wis on fire”.
However, all was not lost as even these days warmed up and a pleasant fishing outing could be had.

Paul Ingram from Newmachar had his usual 3 fly set up this time with mainly an apps bloodworm on the point and buzzer or cormorants on the dropper.  It served him well as he had 18 fish for his day session.  Richard Parley followed closely with 17 fish this time with an apps and egg fly combination.
Ronnie Ewen from Macduff fished his usual home tied cormorants and they didn’t let him down as it got him 15 fish to the net.
Bill Wiseman from Huntly stuck to using damsel lures of varying size of bead colours and as it was his first time visiting the fishery he was very pleased with netting 12 fish.

Fishing buddies from Ellon, Graeme Ellington and Alan Smith had a nice 4 hour session where they landed 14 and 12 fish respectively.  Graeme used mainly the humungous lure and Alan the damsel lure.  Kenny Strachan used a cat bug to good effect and this got him 10 fish, Albert Trail used the mop fly for 9 fish and Fred McCally used a mixture of nymphs for his 7 fish.

So all in all this has been some encouraging fishing to be had for what is normally the depths of Winter.

Lets hope the new week is not full of “yesterdays”!
