Lochter Report - Luring Them in at Lochter
« on: 21/08/2019 at 11:22 »

Usually at this time of year its all small dry’s, emergers and buzzers that are being perfectly presented across the ponds to no avail but with an abundance of fly life coming from the fields, trees and bushes around Lochter then, at times, it can be frustratingly hard to compete for the fish’s attention.

To this end, even for the purist amongst us, it may sometimes be worth taking the Monty Python approach as is:- take a deep breath, dust down and open the lure section of your fly box and mentally build yourself up to saying in your head “And now for something completely different”.

As you nervously gaze downward your eyes will be met with a myriad of sizes, shapes and colours.  There might even be a budgie lure but in keeping with the Monty Python theme I don’t confess to being aware of the “ex-parrot” lure but I could of course be mistaken because you never know with fly fishing.

Plenty of lures were used last week and very successful they were.

Callum Laird fished all 3 lochs using a white fritz or blue damsel and he had 15 fish for his efforts.

Fishing duo Peter Wilson and Walter Senior fished different colours of Walters own WSW lure and they both ended with 14 fish for their day’s session.

Ryan Grant from Aberdeen, a newcomer to the sport, did very well fishing a cat’s whisker bringing 12 fish successfully to the net.

Steve Prince and Peter Young fished the Muckle Troot mostly and they both had 11 fish on an assortment of blobs, buzzers and the WSW.

B Lawrenson kept 3 nice trout and returned 11 others in a 4 hour session also using the WSW.  J Dunn used an assortment of wets for his 10 fish, F Gallacher used a black and gold buzzer for his 9 fish and Bill Ingram had 9 fish on a cat’s whisker.

Also some of our sizeable home reared rainbows made an appearance with Greg Mair catching a lovely 9lb fish on a Semtex lure, Jim Lawson from Stonehaven had an 8lb fish on a Dennis the menace buzzer and Paul Williamson on holiday from Inverness had 3 fish over the 5lb mark during an afternoon into evening session.

So all in all still some good sport to be had so always look on the bright side of life!
