Down Lochter way last week, it’s not the buzz of bees that was the talking point, but the prodigious amount of fly life in the water, which brought on a steady and encouraging amount of fish ‘on the feed’. Buzzers seemed to be their staple diet, in most cases from size 12-16, with black or the ‘Dennis the menace’ being the most effective. Many of the takes were sudden and savage so you had to have your wits about you at all times.
Lloyd Rattray had two outings during the week and he fished small buzzers along with a PTN and was rewarded with 27 and 11 fish respectively.
Colin Macdonald used a buzzer and cormorant combination on his two outings and very effective they were as he had 19 and 17 fish respectively in the net.
Brain Ross kept faith purely with buzzers and he had 19 and 14 fish for his two visits.
Other combination of buzzers used were Albert Trail who used them with the mop fly to get 15 fish and R Prentice from Aberdeen used them along with klinkhammers and a damsel.
Other notable returns were Paul Keir with 25 fish on the WSW then crunchers, Peter Young with 26 fish on lures and blobs, Stuart Stephen had 15 on diawl bachs and Graham Duthie tempted 9 fish on nymphs including a beautifully spotted brown trout of 5lb.
With the rapid approach of May we can only hope it is a case for shirtsleeve order, dry flies and a prolific evening rise.
In May the Fishery will be open from 8am to dusk so this should provide every opportunity for some great evening sport amongst the failing sunlight.
