A little river fishing....
« on: 11/09/2018 at 14:20 »
I could do with making a trip up to Aberdeenshire for some relaxing fishing; river or stillwater. I see lots of options for stillwater fly fishing but could do with some advice on where to fish the fly on the rivers.  Somewhere I can leave my wife to relax with a book in our motorhome while I fish would be ideal, and if we could park up overnight (quietly, no kids and no dogs with us) we could maybe make it a day or two.  And as a bonus, if there was a pub or restaraunt nearby that would just be ideal!
We're happy to use an approved site, or just the car park, and happy to pay for our stay.
Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Hi Jake ..... welcome to the forum.

For camping you could try Alford, see http://haughtonhouse.co.uk/, which is a good location to base yourself for exploring the River Don. The campsite is on the banks of the river and day permits are available, you could also move around during the day from that base and explore the Inverurie Burgh Fishings for example, see https://www.fishingthefly.co.uk/inverurie-angling-association.html. Inverurie is a large enough town for your wife to explore.

The campsite at Ythanbank https://coolcamping.com/campsites/uk/scotland/highlands/aberdeenshire/1272-ythan-valley-campsite# is supposed to be very good, I'm not sure if it is tents only though?

You'll also find some stocked fisheries in the 'Stillwaters' link at the top of the page :wink

Best wishes
Mike

Thanks Mike, Alford is known to us and handy as it backs on to the River.  I had a wee go on Tullich a couple of weeks back; small but nice and friendly - and cheap too. Looks like there's lots of options certainly and all worth a visit. Thanks!
