Old fly line identity
« on: 28/08/2018 at 12:50 »
Many years ago I inherited some fishing gear from an Uncle, amongst which was an old Intrepid fly reel with a line on it.  The reel was in very bad condition - I believe it had been used in salt water in Canada, so I binned it but kept the line.

The line itself is a level 3wt floater of unusual construction and must date back to the 60's or 70's.  It is incredibly supple and has no memory at all....

I've loaded it on a vintage 3 pillar fly reel I restored a number of years ago....

Considering the lines age I'm amazed at it's condition, particularly as I know my Uncle used it regularly.  Can anyone identify it?

Presumably that's an old woven silk line.

Presumably that's an old woven silk line.

Maybe Bob, but it's plastic, (or something), coated and very smooth.  It casts well and floats high in the water without any treatment.  I'm currently using it with a furled leader and turnover is great.
