It has been great over the last two school holiday weeks to see so many youngsters at Lochter Fishery Oldmeldrum having a go at fishing. Often there are Dads or Granda's in attendance passing on skills and techniques which they learned many years ago from their parents or grandparents. Everything from simply tying on a hook, to the more testing skill of casting a fly. The thrill of catching your first fish is there for all to see and will be remembered for a lifetime.
Demonstrating the fact that you never lose the enjoyment of fishing was Mary Barnett, on Saturday Mary, who is a member of the Harbour Board Fishing Club, was also celebrating her 86th Birthday. She hooked two nice fish both of whom unfortunately got off before they could be netted. However, she thoroughly enjoyed her day which included a nice lunch of soup and sandwiches plus a fine selection of home bakes served in the fishers bothy.
During the week the fishing was good, everything from Buzzers to Minkies scoring well. Peter Young had thirteen mainly on WSW’s, while at the other end of the scale, Dave Ingram used Small Dries and Diawl Bachs to account for eight. Lures were the choice of Geoff Gill who landed seven as did Ryan Reid using Mini Cats. Bill Gibb showed his consistency with seventeen using Buzzers, Nymphs and Dries while Nicky Wood had an amazing afternoon catching and releasing sixteen all on a Black Blob.
The forecast is for the wind to swing round to the west and bring slightly milder conditions. This should keep the flies hatching and the trout active which is good news for fishers.
