Looking at the SEPA website it looks like the Dee went up between 2 and 4m in ~12hrs.  It must be one of the biggest spates in history.  Judging by the SEPA website it will be new record high's for most of the monitoring stations.

This might sound like a stupid question but what created the massive change in height? Rapid snow melt combined with heavy rainfall?

Cheers

We were in Ballater yesterday helping out and it is surreal! standing by the river there were bits of caravans, clothes and even a fridge in the branches of the trees ABOVE out heads!

Lots of new sandbars/rocks in the river too, with some bends in completely different places!!
Cass has told me it is still absolutely peeing down out that way and a check on SEPA shows the Dee rising rapidly above Ballater :(

That's real bad news .......... New flood warnings for Inverurie today too, but not on the same scale as Ballater :z6

Just had a look on the SEPA site and see the Don at Alford is the highest its been recorded. Fair amount of water coming down looking at the Strathdon images and Kintore up again.

The Don is off the top of the scale  for Alford, on the SEPA water level data website.

The roads are going to be a nightmare for folk trying to get home tonight ...... so many closed :z6

Kintore and Inverurie both have severe flood warnings now http://floodline.sepa.org.uk/floodupdates/info/town/Inverurie

Maybe not so much for the coming season, what damage will it cause to the spawning redds & future stocks?

My folks live in Ballater an have managed to avoid the flooding in terms of a few feet away. Most of there friends have not been so lucky seeing 4ft of water in there home. Having see some of the damage caused by flooding my hart goes out to all who have been effected.

I think both the dee and don will be badly effected in the next few years even with all the talk of non returning stock.

Well, living 715 feet above sea level did not help us :(  It is a very helpless feeling watching water running into your house.

As for the fishing...well, the Dee certainly received a stocking of Rainbows...so at least there is something to catch!!
