For half of the week the poem was quite apt it being a salutation of fine weather which had many a fisher dusting off his dry fly box and wondering which half chewed favourite hackled fly would last another casting.
In the fine weather of last week we did have some excellent top of the water sport and some of the evening rises were phenomenal, many took advantage.
Ricky Taylor, on holiday from Penicuik, had 18 on bushy’s, Denny and Gordy Mackay from Inverness had 18 and 12 respectively on CDC hoppers and a wide selection of very small black dries.
Albert Trail from Aberdeen had 10 on hoppers as did Paul Devlin from Lanark and Bill Gibb had 11 on bibios.
Buzzers, especially size 14 or smaller also proved effective with Bill Menzies from Newmachar netting 11 on Dennis the Mennace ones
D Mair had 13 on a combination of black buzzers but also found a white cruncher to work well.
As a cold north easterly wind developed later in the week, the fish went deeper down and lures came more into their own.
Davy Wood netted 17 on his favourite WSW and Walter Senior, his fishing companion, was closely behind with 15.
Going through the returns sheet, the top 5 lures of the week were the small Semtex lure, the green and white fritz, the Montana, the lap dancer and last but not least eh ubiquitous blob of any hue.
Let’s hope that the pleasant sight for the next week is some “June sunshine, like powdered gold over the grassy hillside”:- here’s hoping!
