Hackle length.
« on: 07/03/2014 at 18:51 »
Hey guys,

I'm onto tying dries now. Started easy with some big March Brown Jinglers, are my hackles too long though? I really struggle to judge the right length of feather for the hook size.

Your thoughts please.

Cheers
Liam

Do they look good to you Liam? If they do the chances are you'll have confidence in the fly and so should fish them effectively.

Hi Liam

It seems Peter is more liberal than me  :z4  the hackle on there looks too long to me. I'd also suggest you start the hackle too close to the eye.

I like the hackle on my dries to be shorter than your example. I use the gape of the hook to judge the length of the hackle barbs - in my example the hackle is around 1 and a third to one and a half times the gape.

Hi Magnus,

The hackle on the Jingler is meant to be slightly longer than most flies, but I agree it is still a little long. Point taken on starting too close to the eye  :z16
