The cost of building a rod
« on: 20/12/2013 at 10:30 »
Grrrrrrrrr...£625 for a rod built from a "kit" purchased in the US for $160 (About £100).

Some professional rod builders really do need to be shot!

Some magazine reviewers also need to be shot!

Little tip, if you are going to try the same thing, do not send promotional material that includes a photo of the components before they are assembled, still in their manufactures packaging, including the reference number from the online catalog!  :X1

I have written back to him...no reply as yet  :X2

Reel seat £10 - £25
Handle £10 - £20
Thread £7.00 tops
Check £3.00
Guides £15 - £25 (unless you buy shite or crazy stuff)
Epoxy £9.99 (will do about 20 rods)
Brushes / tape / mixing cups 5 min epoxy £12.00

All retail prices

£625 seems excessive for a $160 kit but a well put together rod is worth a few quid, I'm assuming that you wouldn't ever build a whole rod (other than for a mate) for the cost you paid for the components and no more and, not charge for time?

You know how long it takes to build a rod....the longest bit being sourcing the materials!  :z4

Tell me about it, distributors that won't distribute and manufacturers that won't retail, PITA.
