New wave rod building
« on: 27/09/2013 at 21:55 »
Interesting :z3 ..... there appears to be a bit of a flurry of activity on the rod building front at the moment. But what will it produce I wonder? :roll

I'm guessing there might be some 'competition specials' for the winter casting league, but will they be held together by gaffa tape, or are we in for some awesome turned wooden components and nifty threadwork? :z5

Looking forward to seeing some photos guys

Cheers

Yes Mike, gaffa tape & bug bond.  Wood is too heavy for a comp rod and the aforementioned items are the only other thing Kev knows how to "work" other than hammers  :z4

I've a list of five to work through, the details of which are all top secret but I can assure you there will be no UV used or tape other than masking tape......

I'm looking forward to Hamish's rod.  I'm sure (despite trying to get me to do it for him) that it will better than it would have been if it had come out of a factory  :z4

Ben

I have never built a rod up before so would not presume to suggest that anything I can produce with hands like shovels can, in any way, compete in terms of build quality with a rod finished by a Korean racing snake or an American geriatric stimulated by cocaine and caffeine. Our resident casting monkey has decreed that he's not going to make my rod up as (apparently) I'm a difficult customer. Tosh, I just expect high standards on high priced products from folk who make rods for a living.
So yes folks it is true, I am going to be building a rod and no, I'm not expecting it to be of terribly high build quality. However, it will still be better than some rods out of some factories..... :z7 Will it be better built than the factory it should have come out of :? Let's wait and see  :wink
(Probably not :( but at least it will be my rod)

It's the future guys! You get exactly what you want. Just wish there was more access to blanks to avoid spending a lot of money on the unknown. Just need for another work trip to the states to buy some more blanks!  Saying that I've still got a 6wt Helios I haven't built!

Remember no photos it didn't happen!

Will get some pic's up tomorrow of build #1.  Not perfect but, it serves the purpose for which it was built

Hopefully #2 will not suffer the same small flexcoat issues that#1 did, #1was needed in a a bit of a hurry!

Can't believe you are sitting on a Helios 1 906 Matt, get it built!  Very nice stick that one.

There you go Matt, bit grubby by now as it has already seen considerable use.

Go ask Eddie what he thinks it would be like to fish with Matt  :z4  Competition broomstick that would probably need something like a 13wt Spey line to bend it.  The 65g DH15 Tournament line I have for it almost feels light.

Ha! I should asked what the blank was. He did mention it was a little stiff on his wee arms!

Just wish there was more access to blanks to avoid spending a lot of money on the unknown. Just

Mudhole sells direct to the UK now. Pretty much any blank you could wish for with reasonable shipping too.

There are a few specialist builders that can get you some interesting blanks, depending on what you are after.
