You'll be lucky Chris!

What are you wanting it for, fishing or casting?

Its for casting Ben.

Yeah a bit thin on the ground.

Andy has been putting me through my paces and unfortunately for my wallet I'm hooked.

Ideally I'd like a lighter more modern rod but have been offered a 18ft Hardy Favourite with the purple whippings, I had the 15 ft version of this and it was a beast, any thoughts on what the 18 footer is like?

Hi Chris,

I don't know the rod, how much are you going to splash for it?  If you are going to buy one Chris, it's not going to be cheap and I'd buy something you can get fixed if you break it.  Break the Hardy (which may be a dog anyway) and will be cash down the drain, cash which would be better put towards something decent.

Have you ever built a rod?  May be worth trying to get a blank, this will cut cost down a bit.

18' rods do come up occasionally on Ebay.

Rods I am familiar with that are worth a punt are

Daiwa Signature
DTX
Norway
B&W Tournament
Zpey (this was a while ago and I think it has changed a bit since then)
Partridge MF or F, former would be my preference.

Don't buy something because it's cheap, you'll only regret it.

Hi Ben.

Many thanks for the info.

I've build a couple and restored also so I'd be happy enough building an 18 footer.

I'll also sit back and wait to see what comes up over the next few months.

I really like Andy's Partridge and I'll watch out for the ones you mentioned also.

Cheers Ben.

See you later.

Chris.

How much would someone pay for a British rolled specialist blank? and what is the market for one?

Quite a lot Rob but the market is absolutely tiny so no one wants to do the development.  I contacted Harrison several times, not interested, Century are the same.  B&W produce the blank that has set pretty much every record in recent years.  Built B&W TC is £976 at RRP.

Have you tried CTS? They used to to an 18 footer that seems to have been highly regarded on foreign shores.

Never heard of anyone using one to good effect in competition Rob although I had clocked the fact that they do several.  My worry would be that it would turn up and be too stiff in the butt and too fast and made out of too high a modulus carbon making it fragile.

Yeah, know what you mean.

Its a shame Century are not interested as their knowledge of carbon and carbon composites is second to none.
