Fishing The Fly Scotland Forum

Howard & Stuart

It has been a rather frustrating time for anglers at Lochter Fishery Oldmeldrum. There have been plenty of fish showing all over the lochs but catching them has been tricky to say the least.
The fish appeared to be feeding on tiny smuts which were difficult to replicate but some anglers did have success in this area, going down to size eighteen and below with tiny buzzers and nymphs. At the time of writing the water temperature has dropped considerably which should result in the fish becoming more active and less picky.
Kenny Burns from Edinburgh netted eight using small black spiders and gnats. Black dries got six for N Campbell, black buzzers six for G Prentice, bushy bibios six for Kev Martin from Stonehaven  and damsel nymphs six for C Johnston from Rhynie.
By far and away the top scorer was Peter Young who had sixteen using a selection of flies ranging from wsw`s to buzzers as the conditions varied.A lesson there for anglers who plug away with one unproductive method when a change of tactics could bring success.
The harvest is getting underway which will create clouds of corn lice a much loved food for trout. Small black flies will be the choice once the corn lice invasion starts.
