Hi Rob,

Quite simply it is to assist turnover.  When casting a shooting head, it needs to ping the reel ideal to ensure turnover.  If the cast is not going to go as far as the amount of line off the reel, raising the tip increases the distance between reel & fly thus bumping the line tight and turning over the fly.

Thank you Ben! Makes perfect sense. Will have to try that on the river tonight as I am off to try casting off my left shoulder and I can see plenty of instances where I will need to force turnover!

Hi Rob

If you're not looking for the ultimate distance, but for a straight fishingcast, do the opposite, stick the rodtip into the water just before the shot is ended.
