What a joy and what a relief. First the two ospreys reappeared at Lochter Fishery Oldmeldrum and immediately set to rebuilding their nest which had taken quite a battering over the winter. Then on Sunday a single swallow was seen plying his lonely trade over the lochs but on Wednesday morning after a change of wind to the south, hundreds of swallows ,house martins and sand martins arrived and were twisting and turning over the lochs snapping up the swarms of flies which were hatching in the mild conditions. Spring had at last properly arrived.
Observant anglers noting the hatches switched to nymphs and buzzers and were able to take advantage of the changes. Robert Hassin a confirmed buzzer addict stuck to his favourite fly and ended with eighteen to his name , Alan Logan used small nymphs and was rewarded with fourteen including one at 6lbs plus while buzzers and diawl bachs worked well for Bill Reynolds who grassed nine. As the week progressed more and more anglers switched to the small stuff and were rewarded. Albert Trail had fourteen on green buzzers .John Freeland thirteen on ptn`s and small black buzzers, Iain Morgan nineteen and M Pirie ten ,Abb Watt eight and Scott Sim nine, all on buzzers.
On Sunday the Lochter Spring Doubles event was a very closely contested affair. Fished using the SANA points scoring system. The winners by the narrowest of margins 41 points to 39 were local duo Kevin Neri and John Brown from two “honest men” up from Ayr Alec Bowler and John Anderson. Ronnie Ewan and Dave Taylor were third. In all £500 was shared by the winners thanks to sponsors EM Diagnostics and all anglers had a thoroughly enjoyable day.
Popping in on Saturday for a cast was Welch Team captain and renown international angler Hywel Morgan who is now the face of Diawa it was nice to welcome him.
Finally a reminder that the first heat of the £1000 Summer Series will take place on Sunday 5th May. This competition which runs right through to October gives anglers of all abilities theopportunity to gain experience as well as having a fair chance of picking up a nice prize.
