hmm...spool stuck

My trusty (usually!) battenkill mid arbor III spool seems to be stuck onto the reel. I noticed it a couple of days ago on the Don, but just took it out the car to have a proper look now  and it won't budge. Anyone got any pearls of wisdom? the little catch slides accross but doesn't seem to release anything on the inside...
