Vision Cult 10'8 #3 or 11'1 #4 or similar
« on: 23/03/2013 at 14:51 »
Looking for some advice on a new rod and was thinking of getting a Vision Cult 10'8 #3 or 11'1 #4 or similar (streamflex ???) as I'm planning on trying a bit more nymph fishing the beginning of the season. I've got a couple of 9ft 5wt's which I'm sure would do but you can never have enough rods and was wondering if the cults would fit the bill and if anyone had used them in the past.

Also looking at advice on leader selection for nymph fishing (buy or make my own tapered leader) and line choice.

Last thing, how would the 10'8" be for a spot of float tubing?

Not used a Vision but could be okay, some peops seem to like them ? The Streamflex XF 11' is a 'wangy' affair I am reliably told - I opted for and XF2 Plus in a #3 for French Leader and nymphing in general, the one that extends from 9' 6 to 10'. I also have a 10' and 9' both in a #4, the 9' is  a cracker. Jeremy Lucas loves his XF2 11' but he only fishes 'Leader To Hand', no fly line. IMHO the Streamflex's are one of the best value for money river rods out there - yes there are better rods but you'll pay quite a bit more for them ! Maybe an XF2 10' #3 or #2 would suit and with a local discount (assuming you are an ADAA member) it will be just over £200. Drop Goolager a line, he uses a 10' #3 XF2 but was considering a 2 wt ! I might get to use my 'plus' in anger on Monday as it looks like nymphs for the forseeable future...

Would really like a 10ft Fario (got the 9ft) but trying to justify the price is a bit hard. I've the Cult Double Hander and really like it hence the thinking on the Cult but realise a double hander and a single hander of the same rod can be chalk and cheese.

Good point as usual, new season and all and always nice to try out a new toy. Probably better to spend some cash on a casting lesson than a rod and make do with the equipment I have.

Saying that, you should see how many golf clubs I have especially putters. Always the clubs fault not mine  :X1.

Andy,
as a semi retired Shell consultant, stop being so grippy just be done with it and by a Helios.

You know it makes sense. There is no point in working if you cant buy toys.

Eddie.

Trust me, Eddie's views of the world are slightly coloured at times. Must be the fumes from all the fly tying varnish :z4. I know I'm getting older but bloody hell, semi retired, I've an 8, 4 & 2 year old at home so £6 is a push never £6k :cry.

Have you looked at the Wychwood River and Stream fly rods? GAC have them in, they do 10 foot #3, 4 and 5 and 11 foot #3 and 4. Superbly put together rods around the £150 of less mark. Reviews rave about the quality and actions for nymphing/river work.

Just a thought.

There is the Sonik Lite as well, they do a 10 footer in 3 and 4 but they are £199 each I think. I have not used these, but do have a lot of Sonik coarse rods, all very good quality, good warrenties and nice actions.

See that's getting to the vision cult price range, think there £230ish.

Well, I used my Streamflex XF2 Plus #3 today, fantastic nymphing rod, very responsive for flicking a pair of nymphs upstream with the extender on - nice slow action  :z16 Now I know why all the 'pros' use this rod  :wink When I changed over to my Helios in the afternoon I felt like my wrist was going to break - as Ben would say 'pokey' !  :z4
