Fishing as it gets dark
« on: 06/09/2012 at 15:14 »
I was out Salmon fishing the other night as it was getting dark. As I was fishing I got to wondering if I should put a bigger fly on now that it was getting darker and also what colour to go for? As bright and sparkly as possible or is a dark fly that makes a silhouette just as good?

Cheers Matt

Matt

The last two salmon I have taken was just at dusk and they took a size 12 Stoat's Tail variant. That was in clear water at summer level. I tend to leave the bright and sparkly things for coloured water.

Irvine,

A black bodied stoats tail or a silver stoat?

Cheers Matt

I have done a bit of fly and lure fishing in the dark for Pike, and the best lures/flies have been black, no colour or sparkles at all. Its all to do with the shilouette of the fly against the sky.

If you look at some of the successful sea trout night flies, they tend to be big and black.
