Fishing The Fly Scotland Forum

Howard & Stuart

In spite of the weather there appear to be quite a lot of visitors around Aberdeenshire and there are certainly plenty of visiting anglers of all ages anxious to try a new venue. Lochter Fishery Oldmeldrum has been welcoming many new faces over the past week and with the option of a coffee and a fine piece for mum in the restaurant and a chance for junior members of the family to have a go on the bait pond or try a lap or two on the karts round the Lochterstone race track, dads have been able to do their own thing on the three lochs with a clear conscience.
Visiting angling dad Bill Farrell up from Moffat had a great day catching and releasing twelve good fish all tempted by his cdc emerger and his family reported “good fun, lots lost” at the bait pond. Another visitor Steve Clark on holiday from Rugby also had a great day with nine to his name mainly on damsel nymphs and reported hardly noticing the rain at all! and J Galloway from Irvine had ten on a sporting ticket all on buzzers.
Local anglers as always mastered the testing conditions, and they were testingly wet on some days. Ronnie Ewen suffered for his sport and was rewarded with fifteen trout on cormorants and buzzers, L Davidson had twelve and John Brown ten on cdc`s.
Buzzers and top of the water flies certainly have been the most successful particularly during the warmer spells. R Mc Pherson kept one and released eight, B Campbell returned nine, Brian Ross eight, P Broadley from Ellon twelve, Steve Wilson nine and Dave Simpson fourteen, all off the top.
Warmer weather is forecast which means plenty of fly life about and plenty of feeding fish. Anglers will have to divide their time between Olympic viewing and having a cast. Perhaps when the Greco –Roman wrestling is on might be an opportune moment to nip out to the waterside.
