Anyone got a copy of the book Clyde style flies?
or have knowledge of some of the patterns.

I'm trying to find a recipe for a Magpie tail.

Cant seem to find any info on line that helps, any input gratefully recieved.

Cheers

The dressing in St Headley's book, attributed to Bert sharp

Hook: Partridge L3A Size 14,16
Silk : Black
Tag : two turns narrow flat silver
Body : tying silk
Wing : paired slips of magpie tail tied low over the body
Hackle : one or two turns of black hen in front of the wing

The photo shows a black spider with a wing of about 3 times the body length.

A similar pattern is suggested for night fishing but in larger sizes with a peacock herl body and more turns of hackle.

Hope this helps

Thanks guys

The flies have turned out quite nice, and i belive i managed to get them pretty close to how they were supposed to look too. :z16

Might just buy the book though, i'm sure i can find lots in there that'll fool The Don trooties too. :z5

"Highlander" Alan shows the wings on his Clyde style flies at the usual length and set up at a "jaunty wee angle". The picture in St Headley's book shows the wing much longer and lying flat along the top of the shank of the hook.

Which model did you follow? Or do you need to tie a few more to test both models?
