Naturalised Rainbow Trout and spawning
« on: 22/06/2012 at 12:50 »
Some of you may remember a heated discussion regarding Rainbows spawning and surviving in Scotland. No intention of openning up the arguement again but I do think it is worth sharing the information I was sent today.

I was given this link http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Uploads/Documents/Book%2023.pdf which is a report from the Fisheries Research Services and highlights this issue on pages 12 and 13.

The question of sustainability remains (although at least two waters on the list show this, several allude to it) but I find it interesting, especially with increased numbers of Rainbows being taken from the Ythan. It appears the Rainbows in the Ythan are escapees, but what's not to say they may have the ability to spawn and in turn, what would the impact be on the Sea Trout?
