Fishing The Fly Forum

As the mercury soared to a record temperature last week, this was accompanied by a frenzy of fish feeding at or near the surfaces as their natural food sources emerged from both the depths as well as onto the surface as hatches landed.
It was found that conditions changed by the hour and suffice to say that those who adapted to these changes had good sport throughout the day.
Black Spiders, sometimes the smaller the better, were found to be very effective throughout the week,. Ronnie Ewen accounted for 18 using them and John Rench from Stonehaven had 12. Euan Strachan from Newmachar had 9 and J Lewis from Aberdeen had 8.
Buzzers, with a variety of colour to their cheeks, also worked well.
Denny Mackay from Inverness accounted for over 20 and recorded in the book that he had the ‘Perfect Day’. Others who used this method were the Kirriemuir Pairing of Willie Milligan and Eck Ewart who also both had over 20. Father v Son- Ernie and Ernest Mackay had 17 and 14 respectively. Scott Sim from Ellon had over 20, Bob Campbell had 14, G Abel had 12, Richard Cater on holiday from Derbyshire had 11 and Lesley Johnston from Aberdeen had 9.
A selection of lures that worked well during the week were damsels, cat’s whisker, nomads and green fritz.
The Lochter Winter League final fish off takes place this Sunday with those hardy fishers trying to take the crown from last year’s winner Dave Taylor.
Counting up their scores it is too close to call so it will all be down to how they perform on the day. The first 3 will all receive Somers fishing tackle vouchers.
We have had a steady stream of names being put down for the Summer League Pairs Competition which starts in April and runs through to September. There is then a final fish off on Sunday 7th October which will determine the winning pair.
Encouragingly, the new format of being able to fish any day in the month has met favourable comment and encouraged many new faces to put their name down.
With the £1,000 first prize it will be a very popular competition, so contact Lochter Fishery on 01651 872787 to register your interest.
