Osprey Returns to Lochter

Osprey returns to Lochter.
The first osprey of the year appeared at Lochter Fishery Oldmeldrum on Sunday afternoon, two weeks earlier than last year and quickly demonstrated that he knew his way about by catching a nice trout right in front of some admiring anglers. Let us hope that this early return means that we are in for a wonderful summer with fishing in shirt sleeve order and plenty of fine balmy evenings to encourage an evening rise.
The Troutmasters final ,also on Sunday ,was a closely contested affair with the bright sun making fishing difficult. In the end the winner by one point( one fish) was Mike Cordiner from Jamie McHardy with Brian Ross in third. Mike will now go on to represent Lochter at the National final at Grafham Water on 14th May.Good luck to him in what is a wonderful event with anglers from all over the country coming together for the bank/boat competition. In the Junior Troutmasters the winner was Ben Mellin from New Pitsligo from Ellon lad, Craig Stuart .Ben ,who casts a lovely line ,now has a chance to test himself at the Junior final at Stonebridge Fishing Lakes in N Yorkshire where he will do well.
Although the Winter League is still to be settled entries are coming in for the Summer League. The new more flexible format and the terrific prize money of £ 1500 ,thanks to sponsors EM Diagnostics ,has certainly generated a lot of interest in what is set to be a contest worth following over the summer. Details of the Summer League can be had from the fishery on 01651 872787 or 872000 or on the Lochter website www.lochter.co.uk.
During the week the fishing has varied with the weather, the fluctuations in temperature requiring anglers to use a wide variety of tactics to get among the fish.
Davy Wood broke his brand new rod early doors but recovered and using his old faithful had sixteen fish on WSW`s and blobs. He kept three for the pot and returned the rest. N Smith had twelve using a variety of flies while M Pirie stuck with montanas and ended up with a score of fifteen for his day. Diawl bachs and black and green nymphs worked for D Simpson who caught and released sixteen .On the Muckle Troot loch the McKays  renewed their family tussle with Ernie Jnr coming out on top this time with eighteen to Dads fifteen. Buzzers were the flies that did the business for the lads.
I saw on the Countryfile forecast for the week that the temperatures are set to soar back up into the mid and upper teens. If this is the case then the fishing will be fantastic as the water comes alive .
