You have to hand it to those keen anglers who braved last week’s chilly conditions determined to enjoy their fix of fishing. There was still a fair bit of ice about and a nip in the wind sufficient to freeze your extremities and other parts for most of the time but in spite of the conditions those hardy lads and lassie turned out for a cast. Now that`s dedication for you!
The temperatures certainly made the fish go deeper and anglers had to take this into account .Intermediate lines and slowly retrieved lures were the preferred choice.
Blobs, fritz flies, bunny leaches, wooly worms and tadpoles all were successful and some remarkably good bags many in double figures were achieved. Tyler Hay had a terrific day on Sunday with seventeen to his name on blobs and cormorants and the previous day S Howie netted eleven with his best at 5lbs using black lures. Earlier in the week when conditions were extremely testing Pete Green caught and released nineteen using his favourite winter fish taker, the woolly worm, J Milton had eleven on little devils and cormorants and S Stevenson nine on montanas.
At the time of writing there has been a big change in the weather. It is mild and windy with the waves making short work of the remaining ice .The Robbie Burns pairs goes ahead this Sunday, 19th Feb at 9am with the haggis to be addressed prior to consumption at noon.
