Compared with last year when the lochs at Lochter Fishery Oldmeldrum were frozen solid for almost three months, this winter has been kind to anglers. Up to this week there has always been some fishable water. That all came to a slithering halt when in the middle of the week temperatures plumeted , even the normally reliable Muckle Troot loch was frozen solid and the best efforts of man assisted by duck and swan failed to keep even a small area clear.  That was the bad news .The good news is at the time of writing, there are fishable areas on all lochs and earlier in the week anglers were able to enjoy a bit of winter sport.
Lady angler Lesley Johnston wrapped up well against the cold and was rewarded with six nice fish attracted by that most reliable of winter flies, the black and green fritz .Also netting half a dozen each were Sandy Reid using a black fritz and Chris McAlister using damsels and black fritz . Montanas and cormorants worked for Ian Reiper who caught and released eight, cormorants and a little devil  cast a spell on nine fish for John Aird while an interesting combination of a pink bunny leach and a bloodworm completely mesmerised sixteen trout for top fisher of the week Andy Robertson.
Hopefully the worst of the winter is past and anglers have some excellent days in prospect at Lochter, beginning with the rescheduled Rabbie Burns Pairs on Sunday 19th February.Later in the season the fishery will host a heat of the Scottish Bank Fishing Championship , a heat of the Airflo National Bank Championship organised by former world champion angler Ian Barr and anglers will have  the chance to participate in the Lochter Summer League sponsored by E-M Diagnostics and which will be offering eye-watering prizes ,more of this later.
