New Year Fishing Ideas please
« on: 04/01/2012 at 09:49 »
Right, I am totally fed up my fishing just now and have decided to concentrate more on those strange fish with adipose fins this year. (and salty fish too :) )

I am going to have a go for Salmon this year, I have only caught them by mistake when trout fishing!

Night time Sea Trout also interest me.

I want some wild Brown Trout too, possibly up in Sutherland.

And I really must get a Grayling on the fly...its only been maggots so far  :oops

Any other suggestions?

I think you've covered most of the bases there Rob having neatly listed the principal 'goals' of pretty much every game angler :wink
So finding additional suggestions (other than foreign adventures for other salmonids) is a bit of a struggle :!

I'd encourage you to 'go for it' and have a real season at Salmon, you're in an enviable position with one of the best and more affordable Salmon rivers in Scotland a mere hop skip and jump over the hill  :z17

Ah..I see what you mean Hamish...I was thinking more along the lines of challenges I guess.

Something a bit different from the norm....but then again, what is the "norm".

I will have my switch rod built by the time the Don opens for Brownies so thats a deffo challenge for me, a big Brownie on a streamer using a Switch rod.

Ahhhhh OK then, here's a few achievable challenges for you, albeit of differing difficulty:

1. A 5lb+ Don trout on a streamer.
2. A Salmon on a single hander.
3. A Pollock over 6lb on the fly.
4. 4 Sea Trout over 1.5lbs in one night.
5. Fish a dozen lochs you have not fished before for wild Brown Trout.
6. Join me for a day or two Ferox hunting with 'alternative' equipment.

That should keep you going :wink

I wish...
2. A Salmon on a single hander.

Had that, highly recommended.  :z16

3. A Pollock over 6lb on the fly.

Got about halfway there last year, must do better this year. I don't know if you've tried salt water fly (I'm sure you have) but it now rates highly on my list of things to get better at before I hang up my rods. The 3 pounder that I had last year was ace and like Texas, bigger is better.  :z16
4. 4 Sea Trout over 1.5lbs in one night.
Done that, with a salmon too - highly recommended. All on a single hander #5 too  :z4
5. Fish a dozen lochs you have not fished before for wild Brown Trout.

On my list for this year. You hear that H?
6. Join me for a day or two Ferox hunting with 'alternative' equipment.

I'm in! Love a bit of "alternate" fishing
That should keep you going :wink

Nice list and ideas, some would be like mission impossible for me though.

Do like the idea of a Salmon on a single hander and a bit of
night time sea trout fishing is a definate for me this year. :z16

Would also like a good size wild brownie from upper and/or lower parkhill to make up for "the ones that got away" last season. :cry

1. Done..if a worm is a Streamer ;)
2. 5lb Grilse on a 5 weight and dry fly from the Manse Pool, The River Don.
3. Was close in Ullapool last August, most deffo one for me!
4. Interesting...but where to try?
5. Planned for a trip to the Limestone lochs of Sutherland! Also some of the hill lochs just west of here. Also want to go and do a weekend hill walking with a tent and a rod :)
6. You are on for that one..name a time and I will be there!

Thanks for the list..some interesting ideas on that one. Option 1 is high on my list hense the switch rod.
