Trout feeding on freshwater snails
« on: 02/10/2011 at 20:02 »
Not sure of the correct wording for what i am trying to describe so bear with me  :z6
Was out at Rescobie today and had a good day, but after spooning my first few trout i discovered they were all stuffed with snails or something along those lines and the shells were also inside there gutts to!
Anyone know what is a good method or fly for trying to target these snail like feeders  ??? ??? ??? ???
A blob is nothing like a snail but the didnt mind  :z4 :z4 :z4

Cheers

Traditionally black and peacock spiders are a snail Imitation
But I would fancy a black or brown blob as well so you should be good :z4

That was the first call, a black blob chopped down so it was very small but no joy! Black and peacock was also considered but these things were pretty chunky and doubt the spider would of looked much like it!
Will have a rake on the net and see what i can find  :z16

Evening Baz

Well after a trip down memory lane & a delve in some old fly boxes:
A long time back we found that the fish at Ythan Valley were feeding on snails
& were not taking anything, I tied these up in the hut, hense they are a bit rough
but they worked a treat.

Haven't used them in years, eventually found them in an old
fly fishing bag in a cupboard

A Bibio can prove useful for this, usually 14s at Haddo :z3
