Why so different ??
« on: 14/09/2011 at 15:34 »
Hi guys, a few questions for the forum.

Below are 3 pictures of rainbows all taken from the same Loch.

The first a cracking strong fish that took all my line out and well into the backing, this had a big head and slender body, is it an old fish ?

The second, a stubby looking fat fish with a tiny wee head, is it an over fed young fish ?

And finally the third, a well proportioned fish that I would say was quite normal. So why the big differences or is that just how it is ?

Thanks Adam.

The tails are a good clue and the fins on the first fish are excellent, in good condition that fish.

I would say you're on the mark with your conclusions.
Fish 1 is an older stockie - quite possibly overwintered. Nice fish.
Fish 2 is a more recent stockie.
Fish 3 is perhaps 'middle aged' in stockie terms.

Nice to see some diversity

Yes, you are quite right. How Hamish hopes to catch anything with that garish reel and line on his rod I cannot understand :wink

Very simple Irvine.
When the fish gets a load of Hamish's bling they are so overawed that they just chomp down on the first fly that comes along. You must have heard - bright day, bright reel   :wink
