Ellon Legion Win at Lochter.
« on: 15/08/2011 at 14:47 »
Six teams of old and not so old soldiers fought out the Royal British Legion East Zone final at Lochter Fishery Oldmeldrum on Saturday .When the final whistle blew the winners with 28 fish were Ellon Legion led by captain Jim Moir along with privates john Brown and Kevin Neri .In second place was Team Tarves and in third Team Turriff. The prize for the biggest fish went to Garry Bothwell of Turriff with a lovely specimen of 8lbs +.
During the week  the variety of weather kept the trout active and plenty of fish were caught.  All styles of anglers were catered for as everything from blobs and lures to small dries seemed to work. This was well  illustrated on Thursday when K Wright had ten on a CDC and J S Townsend twelve on a WSW and on Friday Andy Barrowman accounted for thirteen using a mix of CDC`s and Mini Lures as the conditions altered.
Buzzers were working well for L Coleman who netted twelve all of which were returned  while G Abel switched between buzzers and blobs to account for a dozen and E Mackay Snr top scored with twenty one all of which were attracted by cats.
With the school holidays drawing to a close it was nice to see lots of youngsters out having a cast some on the bait loch using the “garden flee” and others on the big lochs trying out their embryonic skills with the fly rod ,often with a good degree of success.
Harvest time is upon us which hopefully for the farmers will see a spell of settled weather and this should mean continued good fishing.
