Spinning rod advise....
« on: 27/05/2011 at 07:06 »
I want to buy a rod for chucking lures in the sea. Something I can put in my suitcase for holidays so gotta be multi section or telescopic. I know absolutely nothing about this kind of gear so any advise welcome. Eg brand, length, weight. I want something decent quality. Also any advise on must have lures I should get both for salty stuff here and abroad. Ooh some simple tips on terminal tackle for toothy critters would also be welcome.
Cheers.
Noel.

I have this one its versatile in that it will cover Salmon/ Pike and light sea work. I'm no expert on lures I just use anything that looks like a sand eel.

Re the terminal tackle this looks like a bargain

Shimano STC Exage or the Snowbee Deep Blue range are both good travel rods. However, both are more suitable for seatrout/mackeral fishing. Saltwater lure rods have a very different taper and construction, tending to have extremely strong butts for setting big hooks and bending into very fast fish. Of course they will still catch fish but if you are looking for something that you will use regularly then its worth looking at some of the dedicated sea lure rods.

I now use a lot of Awa Shima rods from Japan. They are cracking rods built for the Jap Bass fishing market (which is huge and very specialised). They have some very very nice travel rods indeed. The Voyager is a dedicated heavy sea rod for Tuna etc. I also have two Sakuras which again are amazing rods, but not travel rods :( http://uk.awa-shima.com/index.php/rods/spinning-rods

Most of my rods are between 8 and 10 feet. The shorter rods are great for minnow baits and smaller lures in amongst the rocks or rough stuff. My 10 footer is great for when wading in the surf. I have rods rated from 5g through to 80g depending on what i am fishing for. Remember, a saltwater lure rod for 5g is a much more powerful rod than a trout spinning rod rated the same...a bit like a 6 weight trout fly rod compared to a 6 weight bone fish rod like an Xi3 or a Helios.

Matched with a Stradic or better 4000 reel will give a balanced outfit. Sealed bearings are a must if you are regularly fishing in the sea, as is a good wash in warm water after use.

Another reel worth looking at is the new Okuma Trio range. These are now my preferred saltwater lure reels. Lovely.

I use braid pretty much exclusivly for my saltwater lure fishing these days. PowerPro being my preferred braid, now available through Shimano.

If fishing for something with teeth, then use a Titanium leader (30lb+) or a heavy Flurocarbon one made of at least 80lb Seaguar or similer.

As for lures, you can go very very silly! Have a look at the lures on here. http://www.monstertackle.co.uk/?gclid=CLP0_bm_taoCFQhP4QodQ2ov4g This shop is one of the best you will find in the UK for salty lures.

Hope that helps a little.
