In the closest finish in years ,Jim Adie won the Haddo Angling Club Competition at Lochter Fishery Oldmeldrum by half a pound. With 38.5lbs to his name he just pipped Sandy Reid who weighed in 38lbs with John Parsons close behind with 36lbs.Sandy did however have the compensation of winning the prize for the biggest fish, a magnificent specimen of 19lbs which was carefully weighed and returned.
On the subject of big fish ,Lochter will again host the Big Fish Competition on Saturday 11th June. With prizes of up to £1000 and a days fishing with angling legend Paul Young ,the competition is a fund raiser for Macmillan Cancer Support. Fish with various coloured tags are released and anglers attempt to catch them unaware of what prize comes with what colour of tag.... until the weigh in. This is a terrific event ,a most worthwhile cause and anglers are asked to support it. This can be done by E-Mail to fishing@macmillan.org.uk, by telephone to 01312603720 or pick up an application at the fishery .
During the week there have been some great fishing days and others when the wind blew so strong it was hard to keep a fly on the water. Mastering the conditions at the start of the week Frank Smith used his favourite floater the Humpy to bring eighteen to the surface and thence to the net while G Chalmers used that old favourite the Mallard and Claret to tempt eleven .
The blustery conditions stirred up the big trout and S Johnston had two doubles in his bag of fourteen caught on buzzers and nymphs.P Christie had a fantastic day with twenty three including two over the magic ten pound mark,Paul Keir landed twenty one on black fritz ,while Charlie McPhee was the top scorer of the week with twenty seven.
The forecast is for continued blustery weather which should keep things interesting on the waterside.                         HH  23/05/11
