Shiny or Dull
« on: 14/06/2010 at 02:11 »
Here is an old question re-asked :z6

Do you prefer Matt finish rods or Gloss finish rods,

Is there specific conditions when you would choose one over the other?

Do you think it matters?

Does a Matt finish rod appear more specialised ?

Or are you swayed by the attractive colour on the nice shiny new toy?

Cheers

Sandy

Do you prefer Matt finish rods or Gloss finish rods, Just to be a pain, I prefer a satin finish, but not seen that on a fly rod yet. If looking at rods in a rack, then a glossy one appeals more.

Is there specific conditions when you would choose one over the other? Having stalked some extremely spooky fish using glossy rods, I am not sure I would be too worried. I also used to fish a lot of small, clear burns and used a glossy rod..never seemed to spook the fish I could see.

Do you think it matters? I think footfall and sky lining are more of a fish worrier than the possibility of a flash from the blank.

Does a Matt finish rod appear more specialised ? That is the way the bigger companies market them, so yes, I would say so.

Or are you swayed by the attractive colour on the nice shiny new toy? Colour of blank is important to me....says the person with 3 very red looking blanks!! I prefer a natural carbon or a very dark olive/green. For some reason, blue has been popular with the Pike boys, maybe they are used to saltwater rods that also seem to be blue.

Hi Iain

You could always give your glossy rods a little rub down with "Palinka" ....... that stuff will take the shine off anything and anybody! :z4

Best wishes
Mike

"Palinka" for those who have not tried it, is a rather interesting beverage made by our european cousins, Hungarian I think.

Aye Mike,  I've asked Paul to send over some more as I've a new flyline that requires the coating removed prior to whipping a loop. :shock

Do you prefer Matt finish rods or Gloss finish rods :?

I've always preferred the look of matt or 'dull' rods over gloss, for some reason they inspire confidence.

Is there specific conditions when you would choose one over the other :?

In truth I'd have to say not really, no.

Do you think it matters :?

Not really, no.

Does a Matt finish rod appear more specialised :?

Yes - perhaps.

Or are you swayed by the attractive colour on the nice shiny new toy :?

As a confessed tackle tart it would be better not to appeal to my magpie like qualities by asking that question :wink

I'm a gloss rod man myself.  I prefer the epoxy on the guide whippings to match the body of the blank

Is there specific conditions when you would choose one over the other

Given my casting skills the flash on the blank is the last thing I need to worrk about

Do you think it matters

Not until i can cast nicely

Does a Matt finish rod appear more specialised

No - sometimes I think it looks half finished

Or are you swayed by the attractive colour on the nice shiny new toy

colour more than shiny new toy.  Hence why when I ordered some new blanks then I chose the colour so that it would look good!

Do you prefer Matt finish rods or Gloss finish rods,
Matt
Is there specific conditions when you would choose one over the other?
Yes. At home, and in a shop I prefer gloss! From that moment on I prefer matt.
Do you think it matters?
Definitely. That's why I glasspaper brand new shinyness off some rods, and matt varnish some.
Does a Matt finish rod appear more specialised ?
Not sure. It appears more functional to me.
Or are you swayed by the attractive colour on the nice shiny new toy?
Honestly? Sure. I prefer darker colours, carbon weave, deep burgundy, green and so on touch some conservative nerve inside.

So if a range of rods/blanks were available in either matt or gloss finishes.
it would appeal to everyone, and no-one would need to potentially affect the protection on the rod.

Same action and spec/price, just a choice of finish :z3 hmmmmm..................................... food for thought.

Cheers for the responses :z18
