March Brown Nymph?
« on: 18/04/2010 at 08:42 »
Toodling about with my new camera yesterday and took a few photo's of 'various things'.

This was a tiny stoneclinger - maybe 7mm less the tails.
When I uploaded them onto the PC there are distinct spots on the femurs.

March Brown?

Any thoughts?

Not sure how long these live before hatching but think from what I have read in the past that it is appx 12 months. Maybe this wee beast would have hatched next season since it is very small and I think that the blotch on the femur indicates either a March Brown or an Olive Upright, both of which hatch on the Don and belong to the Genus Rithrogena and have a large hindwing. The OU has in the past given us more consistent sport than the MB,hatches a bit later and tends to come off over a longer period in the day rather than short(sometimes) concentrated bursts often associated with the MB,

Living and learning here, didn't know that. Only posted the pic as the MB is the only nymph I knew of with these spots and was amazed to see them in the photo as there's no way I could see them on the real thing.

Camera is opening up new avenues Mike.

Great stuff Iain ..... but you'll have to stop catching the nymphs with your teeth, look what you've done to the 3rd tail :shock

Cheers

Cracking photo Iain :z16

I think richard is spot on, it looks a little bit too light for an MB, could just be immature though (the eyes also suggest this), as it is too small for either MB or OU. The dot is there on both flies.
At a guess i'd go with Olive upright though, i'm sure the MB's tails are a different colour :roll (speckled possibly)

Get some more pics though, i always intended to follow up the Videos with a series on the natural flies of the river and try to make a decent online library of bugs for people to peruse, but so far fate has not been kind :z4

Cool

Sandy
