The Stimulator one of my favorite flies strip it through a wave, hang buzzers off it its almost unsinkable sort of a classy thingamebober.  Works on the river as well as lochs took my biggest Don trout on this fly minus the legs .  This is my first step by step so here goes.

Hook - Old partridge forget the make
Tail - Elk
Rib - Fine gold wire
Body - Any colour dubbing match the hatch if you have a particular insect in mind
Body Hackle - Brown
wing - Elk
Throat Hackle - Grizzly
Thorax - Dubbing
Legs - Orvis small rubber legs (optional)

Step 1

Tie in a small clump of Elk hair for a tail and the fine gold wire for the rib

Step 2

Dub the body leaving enough room for the wing and thorax.  Then tie in the body hackle.

Step 3

Palmer the body hackle back to the tail and trap down with the fine gold wire. Tie the wire down at the thorax and cutt off.

Step 4

Take a small clump of Elk and stack in a hair stacker or use your fingers tie in backwards almost reaching the tail.  Then tie in the grizzly hackle for the the thorax

Step 5

Tie in the ruber legs i leg on each side of the body.  Tie in the middle of the leg from above the legs will look like an X.  (These are optional must admit dont think the fish care if the fly has them or not)

Step 6

Palmer the Grizzly hackle up the thorax between the legs and tie off at the head.  Whip finish and varnish attach to the leader and catch some fish.

View from above showing legs

Two excellent SBS’s by both Matt and Michael.
Have always liked the look of the Alexandra, and will definitely have to try out a stimulator.

The Endrick Spider named after the River Endrick.

A simple little fly that works well for brown trout in rivers and lochs and for rainbows in lochs and stocked fisheries so it is a very useful one to have in your box.

Materials
Hook : Partridge Capt Hamilton Wet sizes 10 to 18. When march browns and LDOs are about size 12 is best.
Thread : Brown 6/0
Underbody : copper wire
Tail and Thorax : cock pheasant tail centre feather
Rib : oval silver tinsel – small
Hackle : grey partridge

Build up a small under body of the copper wire

Catch on the thread and bind down the wire. Build up a small taper at the rear onto the wire so there will be no bumps when you wind on the body.

Fold 4-5 pheasant tail fibres back a right angles so all the tips are aligned and snip off.

Tie in the fibres for the tail.

Snip of the waste, level with the back of the copper underbody and catch in the rib.

Cut of another 6-8 tail feather fibres and tie in with the points facing towards the eye of the hook. Wind the thread to the front of the copper wire.

Wind the feather fibres forward and catch off with the thread. Trim the waste and then wind on the rib in the opposite direction and tie off.

Select a suitably sized grey partridge feather, clean off the fluff at the base.

Stroke most of the fibres towards the base of the stem.

Tie in by the tip and trim off waste.

Fold the hackle fibres towards the tail of the fly and wind on the hackle, keeping on folding the fibres back. Two turns are plenty.

Tie off the hackle and trim the waste.

Whip finish and put on a drop of head cement. That’s it.

Hot spot Gammarus
Hook:    Partridge Authentic Czech Nymph Size 10
Thread:  Anything you like in Brown/ Tan or to suit your choice of dubbing
Appendages:    Grey Partridge fibres
Rib:   Copper  wire – or wire/ mono of your choice
Underbody:   flat lead strips
Back:   Orange scud back or similar in colour to suit pattern
Body:    Natural & Orange (for hotspot) Awesome Possum or of your choice

Place hook in vise

Cut strips of flat lead foil approx. 2mm wide.

Remove backing & apply 1st wrap of lead to hook shank – lead should start and finish as shown in picture

Build up layers of lead to produce desired shape – consecutive layers should start and finish inboard of previous wrap.

Start tying thread and cover lead making a smooth outline.

Tie in some grey partridge fibres at the tail of the shrimp.

Tie in a length of copper wire at the tail and secure as the thread is wound up to 2mm from the eye.

Tie in another bunch of grey partridge fibres – forward facing – at the head of the fly.

Select a strip of scud back and cut a point or taper at one end. Tie in at the eye – facing forward.

Run the tying thread back down to the tail and start to dub the body. Use the natural fur to form the body, stopping to introduce a hot spot of orange.

Fold the scud back over at the eye and secure with a wrap or two of thread.

Ensure the scud back is sitting centrally down the shrimp and lock off with 2 turns of the copper wire at the tail. Wind the copper wire up the body to segment the ‘fly’ and secure at the head.

Remove tag of scud back and of copper wire.
Tease out ‘legs’ from dubbing and varnish head

Hi folks

I think our winter "step by step" competition has proved to be great fun and we will hopefully do it again next year. A big thank you to all those who took part, I found all of the SBS interesting and I've picked up a good few tips along the way!

The winner of the March SBS entries is Iain "Goolager" for his Hot spot Gammarus.
Well done Iain! Please drop me a PM when you get a chance and let me know which prize you would like :z16

I hope you all enjoyed taking part this year! :z12
Best wishes

Well done Ian. Nice tying, done by the light of the street lamps too by the look of it. No wonder you got yourself a new bench lamp :grin

Mike,

WF4 line arrived today, many thanks. I'm off to spool it onto the reel now & relegate the Wulff TT to holding up the sweet peas.
