Mike, books by Tom McGuane - The Longest Silence among others.  Also, A River Runs Through it.

On the more factual side of things there is caddisflies by Gary LaFontaine and his superb fly tying book - Trout Flies - Proven Patterns.  Oliver Kites Nymph Fishing in Practice and Larry Tullis book on nymph fishing (VERY American style) I could go on and on.

However one final STRONG RECOMMENDATION is Pale Morning Done by Jeff Tull.  He has a new book out next year which I can't wait to read - Streams of Consiousness.

You can usually pick up John Gierach's books on Amazon , or on E-bay , I got Even Brook Trout get the Blues for a couple of quid, really enjoyed it.

I aslo read the longest Silence this year , again a cracking read.

For a newcomer or someone who wants more knowledge on "wild fishing" , Lesley Crawfords "Trout Fshers Handbook is quite good.

Best till last though the best read this year was Bob Wyatt's "Trout Hunting" a first class book I would highly reccomend.

Hi Mike,

No. 1 Bob's Book . Best there has been on these shores for quite a while.

In no order after that .

Longest Silence.

A Good Life Wasted   -  Ames.

On The Run - Bennedetto - This is a book for anyone who has or wants to fish for Stripers. Very atmospheric.

What the Trout Said  - Not much new in fly tying then !

Trout and I - worth re-reading .

and last but certainly not least ,

Days and Nights of Game Fishing - W. B. Currie , the former editor of Rod and Line , for all of us Oldies.

Just a short selection from a quick look in my cupboard.

Paul.

Wow some great books there, especially the story books , great to read during the winter.

The list goes on and on, no surprise there then.

I would add

"The essential G.E.M. Skues" by Kenneth Robson, a condensed version of my Heros best moments in text, If you want to start to understand fish its a great place to start.

"To meet the first March Brown" by Geoff Bucknall, good to get you going in March.

And my Bible, and the best UK river fly pattern book by a mile,
"Rough stream trout flies" by Taff Price

Most of the books i like are old, such as TE Pritt "north country flies", and "Brook and river trouting" by edmonds and lee, also "The practical angler" by Stewart, however Leslee Magees book already on the list "flyfishing a North country tradition" covers all these texts and brings them together brilliantly.

Two other really useful books

Masters on the dry fly
and

Both are a collection of articles by some of the best anglers in the world covering a wide range of tchniques, i have always found them extremely useful.
