Baz,

There is no desputing their effectiveness and popularity It makes obvious sense for companies to stock them and all their variants  'cos it's money in the till.

Guess I'll have to buy some Airflo DI lines  :z6

Hi Iain / Paul,

The material Iain used for the wing of his flies is very similar to a product that Davy Wotton introduced at one of the "Partridge Tying Days" many years ago.  He had a ball of synthetic yarn and cut a small section off and tied a fly he called a "Dun Wing Dun".  The fly did not have a hackle and he said the fly fished much better by not having a hackle.  Several of us who attended the demo day got a sample of this yarn from Davy to take home and tie a few flies with.  I liked the flies and I bought more yarn from him when he started to sell it in his shop.  I will dig out a packed and post a photo of it.

The big thing that Davy was stressing with this fly was the fact that the fly floated in the film rather than on it, the fly is only suitable for the smoother glides and calmer streams, it will get swamped in the very rough water.  The thing that impressed me about this fly was how easy it was to loose your fly in a hatch, (therefore very similar to the natural), providing you don't take your eye off the fly when you cast above a fish it is ok.

The fly is a very quick tie and if you loose a dozen when fishing on branches etc, it is no big deal to fill the spaces in your box, all in all a great no nonsense fly.

Since Davy sold up and moved to the USA, I have not seen Dun Wing Yarn for sale in the UK, you can use Poly Yarn, the TMC Aero Yarn would be great and the new Trigger Point fibres also work well.  I hate the hanks Trigger Point fibres come in but that is just me. Not user friendly in my opinion.

If Iain can't get his camera sorted, I could post a rough step by step, though I would rather defer to Iain if he can get his camera sorted.

I tend to use grey squirrel body fur dubbing for the thorax and pick it out well, it is a 3 or 4 minute fly at most and can be tied in the smallest sizes very easily.

Just a great pattern.

I will find out if it is possible to post the original article that Davy had published in Fly Fishing and Fly Tying here as it gives a good background to the fly.

Kev.

Still not found anything better than Aero dry wing.  Floats so well that with small patterns it is enough to float a fly on it's own and I like the range of colours but is is rather dear.

Not thawing here Paul, not got above -3 all day, -9 at 09:30.

Latest stuff

Hi peter,
I'm going to tie some of your March Browns this season.

Baz,
What's the story with Fabsil? Does it matt the fibres together? Any down sides? slicks, etc?

Yes Aero is expensive (cheekily so) but arguably the best material on the market and you can make one hell of a lot of flies from one card - more annoying if you like to have an assortment of colours when it's easy to ring up a shilling or two.

How long did they take to tie  :shock

Now for the geeky part :z6
I discovered that one length of holofusion ties 5 flies, and that i can comfortably apply 2 sets of eyes for each mix up of 5min devcon. So the flies were tied in batches of 10 (4 of) and epoxied in pairs
I entered the swap to keep me occupied for a couple of weeks and kinda finished the flies in 3 days :roll

I reckon it takes about 45 mins to tie up the 10 flies and then another 45 mins to apply 10 sets of eyes. (that includes coffee or wine, depending on daytime or evening :z7)

So i suppose they took 6 hours to tie, didn't seem that long :shock

Interesting topic on Aero wing, never used fabsil either.
Can't think of anything useful to add :z6 Never use either, or watershed for that matter, i like my dryflies to get damp :z4
I like to add Aquel to the parts i want to float, if i want it too.

On Day 3 of torrential rain  :shock
So more flooding here than at home at the moment.

Been back at the vice this afternoon, winding down after work.
Tying up a large scale EP fibre Minnow, well its a bit big to be a minnow :z6 But the technique is the same, i think :z6

I had a lot of fun tying it though.

Its on a Size 9/0 longshank hook :shock For scale this picture also has a a size 12 damsel :z18

My flies are getting more like Rob's all the time :shock :z4 :z4

Good fun though, i understand fully why Magnus calls this fly building, not fly tying :z4

Hi guys

Heres tonights efforts started off tying some streamers for the Don then got a bit more adventurous and tried my hand at a mini tarpon toad.  Trying to convince the wife she wants a trip to cuba.  Not the best tyings youll see but a good nite was had and hopefully the fish will approve.

The Mini Tarpon toad might try one on a small hook for the rainbows.

Will have to attempt a step by step sometime soon

Cheers

Michael
