I sent Irvine a link to the Salmon Fishing Forum where one of the members has tied some nice spiders for sea-trout.  I had a go at copying them the other night I'll hopefully get some photos tonight.  I over did the hackles though really.

Cheers

I haven't Irvine but I know a man who has.  Will who sometimes posts here fishes an endrick spider as a searching pattern for trout and hooks a lot of salmon on that.  Really irritating, he ties them with lots of Cu wire under the body for weight so they look like a nice spider that has eaten one to many McDonalds, ugly chunky fly but they work!!

I use the Endrick spider too and it has been successful for me on trout. Never taken a salmon though. Maybe that is because I tend to use it in the spring and the salmon have not got that far upstream at that time of the year.

There was a fishing programme on telly two or three years ago when Fiona Armstrong came to fish on Glen Tanar. She spent the afternoon on the stocked trout pond and I had to lend her my rod, line and flies. She did quite well and all the rainbows she got were on the Endrick spider.

Matt,
not being an authority on spiders I'm not going to tell you how they should be tied but, to me, doubling a hackle lends itself more to a swept back type finish rather than the true -soft, perpendicular, dare I say scraggy result - which would be more desirable for a free drifting river pattern.
The typical, commercial, shop bought 'spiders' have a swept back style - like a traditional wet without a wing (and possibly tail). Dare I say that more river anglers fish spiders down and across (tight line) than upstream dead drift and they are typically pulled on still waters by the majority therefore people are happy to use the mass produced swept back style.

I don't know if this was what you were infact asking but It's my take on things.

I always use scraggy perpendicular hackles for upstream spider fishing.

cracking spids Iain, love them.

Matt , I would say no, check out the SBS's
the flies should look like the ones iain has put up
with the hackle perpendicular to the hook
sometimes even pointing slightly forward  :wink

Just a post to say that I wasn't being at all derogatory to swept back spiders or the people that fish this method - it most definitely does account for fish.

Twas my intention to swing out bye this afternoon (thought I had your mobile No. on my phone) and see this new build of yours but by the time I got to Kintore I wondered if you'd still be there so left it.
