'Matching the Hatch' by Pat O'Reilly

Is this the best book out there on the subject? Any recommendations?

Had a Stonefly siting on my shoulder on Friday which was easily 1 3/4" long - don't know much about these things.

Iain,

It is a good book but probably a bit elementary for you, I recommend it to beginners although there are some nice photos in there.  You would probably get more out of a copy of Goddards "Waterside Guide".

Another book you might like to check before you decide which to purchase,
THE FLY FISHERMAN'S ENTOMOLOGICAL PATTERN BOOK by John Cawthorne
I have found it very usful when tying realistic patterns. :z16

An excellent book that may be of interest to you is J R Harris's, Anglers Entomology
This book is now over 50 years old but, in my opinion, is still as relevant to todays anglers as it was when it was first published
