« on: 09/02/2009 at 19:29 »
Im looking for a 17" alloy for my x- Trail the spare is only a temp wheel and your not allowed to tow with it  :cry
I phonned a nissan dealer and was quoted £599 + vat for 1 wheel :!

So was just wondering if anyone knows of any smashed X-Trails with 17" alloys (17 x 6- 1/2 J) i tried overton but they dont have.

If you cant find at a breakers like www.cws4x4.co.uk or www.equicar.co.uk who specialise in breaking 4x4's you might like to consider a steel wheel replacement?

I got 4 steel wheels (modulars) and 4 mud terrain tyres for one of my Landies for around £320 brand new. They are heavy duty and rated well above the requirements for towing with my 110. Might be an idea if its just for a spare...should get change from £100 if you shop around.

Well it seems that no one can supply an after market wheel they all say i have to get one direct from nissan  :cry
Cant find a scrappy anywhere in uk with one.

Whats your opinion on my story do you think its up to me to shell out for a new wheel?

When i bought my X-Trail i asked the dealer (nissan dealer)to put on a tow bar as i would be using it to tow my caravan, now after reading the manual it states that you cant tow with the supplied spare.

Am i right in saying that i have been supplied with a wheel thats not fit for purpose?
The dealer should have pointed out at the time of purchase you couldn't tow with the supplied spare (they didn't know untill i pointed it out to them).
Am i wrong to think if i bought from a nissan dealer and it was a nissan dealer that fitted the tow bar they should have made sure it was the right spare?

To tell the truth Dave, I dont think you have a leg to stand on. The spare supplied is fit for purpose in that it is designed to get you home or to a repair place, and that is where Nissans obligation ends.

Any extras you have put on such as a tow bar means that it is then upto you to make sure your vehicle is fit to do the "extra" you ask of it.

Having said that, I cannot stand companies that advertise there vehicles as work horses, but then do not supply the kit for this. Landrover supplies a spare that is identical to the alloys, all be it on a steel rim, so if you do get a puncture with a trailer, then you are fine. Then again, Landys are sold as tow vehicles I guess.

But then is the dealer not wrong for not pointing out that i needed a proper wheel when they fitted the tow bar?

Dave,
I totally agree with you, but your average car dealer is lucky if he knows who his father is, let alone the speed and load ratings of the tyre under the carpet in the boot or hanging on the back door ;)

I had a trye fitters in Aberdeen try and fob me off with tyres for my Disco that would have been illegal as they did not have a high enough load rating meaning they could have burst due to heat build up.

I trust no one with cars, bikes and tyres and will always do my own research before parting with cash  :z4 :z4 :z4

Rob,

I spoke to citazins advise and they told me that the sales person is supposed to know the product inside out and should have informed me that i would need a proper wheel when asked them to fit the tow bar, as they didn't do this they didn't provide a proper service when they sold me the vehicle (you could say they misled me to think the wheel was ok as they didn't say it wasn't).

Apparently a court of law would take my side on the matter.

They told me to write to the managing director of the dealership and explain the situation and my expectations, so i'm now waiting on a reply.

You mention your landie, seen this thought you might be interested http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Land-Rover-Range-Rover-18-Alloy-Wheels_W0QQitemZ130292677523QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarParts_Acc_Wheels_tyres_Rims_Car_Wheels_ET?hash=item130292677523&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1683|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318

Dave,
I hope you have success. I agree with what you are saying, but I am sure they will have covered they have covered there backside somehow :( You know car dealers, slippier that the average eel covered iun vaseline!!

As for the wheels..thanks for the link. Unfortuantly the stud patten on later Rangies is different from mid 90's Discoverys..and as I have 3 sets of wheels in the shed, I am sure I will be killed if another set turns up..lol
