PTN  universal acronym for Pheasant tail nymph.

Of course it could mean Pleeeeeeese, Trout, NOW. a common prayer to the god of the wild trout fisher.

I have always looked for PTNs with "leggy" hackle, as these have worked well for me and the ones that also have an orange thorax are good.

I haven't had much success with size 10s, but 12s and 14s have produced lots of fish for me on stillwaters and the river Don.

Best wishes
Mike

Here is a PTN variant for your consideration. I, like others on the site , have had little luck with the traditional pattern but this variant works well with myself on a floating line.

Tail               - PTN fibres
Body             - brown dubbing
                    - ribbing, copper wire
                    - lead wire (optional)
Thorax cover - PTN fibres
Thorax          - Fluo red wool
Hackle          - Red game cock

Had some sucess with the PTN mainly at Insch when the fish aren't biting and stalking is the only way forward, but when it comes to fishing blind, i can't say i've had any luck.

got quite a few in my box but only ever caught with a size 10 one with orange thorax . saying that i seldom use them as i prefer a hares ear . probably down to confidence

If you leave off all the materials then i'd have much more success.

Hence the NPPTN.
