Rainbow with eggs
« on: 15/09/2008 at 19:15 »
I went to waulkmill on Sat and was told i had to come home with Sunday's Tea.
I caught a nice 4lb bow but its rainbow stripe was very red in colour also its gill covers, when i got home i set about gutting it a when i opened it up there was loads of eggs along both sides of cavity.

How had this happened i thought they were all sterilized when just fingerlings  :?

If I had known the color of the fish was an indication i wouldn't have killed it.

Most of the Rainbows these days are Triploid , the eggs are heated to a certain temperature to make them "sexless" its not always 100% though and you will get the odd fertile female , the fish can't sucessfully reproduce in still water though, they just loose condition by making eggs or milt.

Cheers
