Good gents,
First, for those who might care, It's been a while since I've last posted. Phone and computer problems in the area I live in mean long delays in reading posts on boards. It seems to be remedied...for the time being!
Second, and to reply to the post...those who haven't attempted assembling your own rod, I would highly encourage you to do so!
If you are already tying your own flies, you have a good start on some of the tools...a pair of scissors! LOL!
Your first build will be your most expensive as you'll need a few other goodies, but once you have them you're set!
Besides...isn't the long, cold, wet Scottish winter looming just ahead?
There are plenty of books and videos to walk you through the process and plenty of rodbuilding forums full of folks who are always happy to help with whatever problem you might have. I learned by taking a class at a fly shop. It was, I beleive, 100 bucks (some time back). For that money I got a Sage blank that was a second and all the components except thread, and five or six weekly classes. I still needed the tools but what the hell, just buy them or make them. A wrapper, turner, etc. The fly shop makes a few dollars because they will probably carry the tools you are looking for and in this particular case, the included components were really ugly and they offered an upgrade discount to buy additional components.
BEWARE though...this could possibly lead you down yet another slippery slope. You just might find yourself wondering how hard it could be to make bamboo! Oh...er I mean split cane! LOL Nah...Bamboo!
You know Mike B, carrying a few components or offering rodmaking classes at your shop could be a good thing! Hell, maybe you already are! I needed some hand holding when I first started!
As always, my best to you all,
Mike
