Down Lochter way last week there continued to be a lot of our home grown trout in the 3-8lb category being caught and we again had great feedback from our customers about the terrific fight being put up by our Lochter trout no doubt helped by the greater depths and distance they have available to run to in all three ponds. There were also a fair amount of double figure trout being brought to the net to fight another day as well as the ones that were ‘released at distance’ which getting broken is now sympathetically known. So all in all we had a lot of happy fishers out enjoying the challenge.
Last week the method that seemed most productive was the ‘washing line’, particularly using it with diawl bachs, cormorants, buzzers or a mixture of all three. It basically means you hang your team of flies in a shallow U shape, covering different depths until you find the ‘taking’ depth.
An expert exponent of this method last week was Paul Keir who on a day session landed well over 20 fish using diawl bachs, getting fish on all 3 ponds.
To keep the washing theme going, it was ‘level pegging’ for fishing buddies Paul Wilson and Ryan Petrie who came down from Morayshire on Saturday as they both had 14 fish each. Paul used a team of cormorants and Ryan mixed it up with buzzers and hare’s ears. Ryan also got a personal best fish of 12lb so he was well chuffed.
Albert Trail used either a mop fly or apps bloodworm to get himself 19 fish and also doing well with apps was Graham Duthie who had 12 fish on that fly.
Jim Adie continued his good form at Lochter with 14 on his favourite mojito fly, Noel Kelly had 10 on blobs with 7lb being his biggest and Jim Kelman of Turriff used the yellow dancer lure to good effect as he landed 9 fish with it. Other returns were Brian Ross with 12 on small nymphs, Colin Wood with 10 on black nomads, Fred McAlley with 8 on diawl bach and bibios and Neil Garden with 8 on a selection of small lures.
Mild but mostly wet weather forecast for the week ahead. Ideal fishing weather so come past and give it a try!
