Title: Greenwells Spider
Post by: Mike Barrio on 09/05/2020 at 11:34
I see Allan Liddle has just done a nice step by step for the Greenwells Spider on the Fly Fishing & Fly Tying Magazine website.

This is an awesome wee fly and was always my go to fly when I started fishing the Don many moons ago

Add to that a Black Spider, Black Pennell, Dry Greenwells, a Sedge and a Silver Invicta ...... and that was pretty much my fly box.

Great stuff Allan  :z16

Looking at the list of "old patterns" I still use the black spider/partridge and orange etc. Some for me I have stopped using like the Greenwell because we no longer have hatches of the dark olive. The black pennel is simply a black spider with a silver rib which for me is still as deadly as it was 70 years ago.
When I go into the shop to get fly-tying materials I do not now know what 3/4 of them are for.
Bob.

Just surfing through posts and saw this......

The Greenwells spider since 1922 is my all time favourite fly closely followed by the Black Pennell.

I remember about 10 years ago fishing out at Insch with my river set up and catching 15 trout on the dry greenwells glory amongst lure and buzzer fishers......they werent shy in coming to ask what I was using, when i mentioned the Greenwells Glory, they asked what it was and what it looked like!?!....

It still works, i had 7 trout on the spider version size 16 last weekend on the Don.

Add in a Cinnamon Gold to Mikes box.....and thats all that is in mine. :-)........oh and my Invicta is pearly not silver,  :wink
